Once upon a time, there was a brilliant and Harvard-educated

 American man working as a Pediatrician at the Boston Children's Hospital. Let's call him Ken

Ken had a very comfortable upbringing.

His parents were highly regarded members of the community.

Ken's father, a prominent businessman, donated large sums to the Harvard Research Institute (maybe that's how Ken got into Harvard).

His mom had quit her corporate job to take care of the kids.

After getting over his fear of bugs, Ken took a stroll along the river and 

met Mr. Ahn.

He used all the money he got from fishing to educate his little girl, Thao.

Thao spoke fluent English and served as a translator for her father. 

Ken grew fond of this family. One day, in their morning talks, he asked Mr. Ahn why he didn't have a boat.

Mr. Ahn, surprised, responded, " Why would I need a boat." 

Ken, ever the problem-solver, said, “So you can catch more fish, make more money, and expand your business.”

Mr. Ahn listened, then calmly asked, “And then what?”

Ken enthusiastically replied, “Then you could hire workers, become the biggest fish supplier, and eventually retire.”

Mr. Ahn simply smiled and said, “But I’m already retired.”

That moment hit Ken like a ton of bricks. Maybe the way we chase success in America is all wrong.

Maybe we overwork ourselves, constantly sacrificing today for a “someday” that may never come.
